Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Start here for answers to frequently asked questions.

How do I get involved? I love your mission and want to help.

  • I am a diver.
  • I want my teen to dive with YDWP.
  • I am not a diver, but I want to participate.
  • I want to donate.

We are happy that you want to get involved with our mission! To participate in any DWP mission, you must be scuba certified and have at least 30 ocean dives and a peak buoyancy certification under your belt. If you want your teen to participate, they must also be scuba certified and have at least 25 dives completed and a buoyancy certification. If you are not yet scuba certified or don’t have a buoyance certification, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in a mission. However, there are tons of scuba clubs around the country that can you get your scuba certification or improve your skills. Visit the National Association of Black Scuba Divers to get more info on clubs in your area.

What other organizations do this kind of work?

There are a few nonprofits that help underrepresented people around the world connect to their history and become more visible in the conservation and environmental movement.

Some of our favorites are:

  • The Greening Youth Foundation – helps young people of color get internships and jobs with environmental organizations
  • Outdoor Afro – connects black people and nature through outdoor activities
  • NEWF – trains the next generation of African conservation and environmental filmmakers

Where can I find more info about the transatlantic slave trade and other shipwrecks?

We love the Transatlantic Slave Trade Database. The Database is an excellent resource for more info on the Middle Passage and the vessels involved in the slave trade.
